Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College volleyball team (6-7, 3-2 in ACCAC) played a tough match against No. 8 ranked South Mountain Community College on Wednesday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The Aztecs fell to the Cougars in four sets 26-24, 25-21, 25-27, 25-19.
The Aztecs tied the first set at 24-24 but the Cougars scored the final two points of the game. The Aztecs took a 21-20 lead in the second set but South Mountain secured the final five points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Pima rallied from a 24-21 deficit to win the third set. They fell behind early in the fourth game and trailed 22-12. The Aztecs made a run to cut the Cougars’ lead in half at 22-17 but fell short in the end.
Freshmen Madi Nash (Sahuaro HS) and Jade Romine (Sahuaro HS) each finished with double-doubles. Nash had 10 kills and 22 digs while Romine had 10 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Kaitlin Schmich (Mountain View HS) finished with 23 digs and freshman Kaleigh Hockett (Desert Mountain HS) had 33 assists.
The Aztecs will step away from ACCAC conference play and head to San Diego for three matches this weekend. They’ll play at San Diego City College on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
