Head Coach Rebekah Quiroz has complete her coaching staff now with the hiring new pitching coach Nicki Johnson, who played for the Aztecs in 2004 – 2005. She also attended Salpointe Catholic High School as a freshman before transferring to Sahuaro High School.
The positions for 2019 on Quiroz’s Staff are; Assistant Coach Jen Martinez, Assistant Coach Todd Judge, Pitching Coach Nickie Johnson and Strength and Conditioning Coach Carla Garret.
Johnson, in her two seasons at Pima, she helped the Aztecs to the 2004 National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship.
As a freshman, she was selected to the second team All Conference Team, and an alternate to the National Junior College Team.
In her sophomore season, she made the first team All Conference Team and won ACLAC Pitcher of the Week once. Nicki also was a first team All Region Team selection as well.
She lead the conference in both victories with a 35-5 record and strikeouts at 226. This garnered her a third team All American honors.
After her Aztec career was over, she played her final two years at the University of Memphis.
In her junior year in 2006, Johnson appeared in twenty eight games with twenty three starts. She finished with a 2.07 ERA and struck out forty three batters looking. Her first win of the season came at the expense of the Ole Miss Rebels who she shut out 11-0. She was on the Tar Heel Invitational All Tournament Team.
Her senior year was highlighted with a nine strikouts effort in the second game of a double header against University of Alabama – Birmingham.
Academically, Johnson twice was on the Conference USA Honor Roll.
Now that the staff is complete, Quiroz and her coaches will now focus on their plans for the upcoming season.
