(Tucson, AZ)
On a warm night on Tucson’s Eastside, the Sahuaro Cougars began the 2018 season with a punishing ground game and successful passing to offset any thoughts of stacking the defensive line by the coaching staff of Casa Grande’s Vista Grande High School.
Even though it was the first game of the season, the offensive line of the Cougars showed they could move people off the line of scrimmage.
Time after time, Sahuaro running backs had huge holes opened up for them as they constantly got into the defensive backfield of the Spartans.
Not only did the Cougars control the line of scrimmage, but the time of possession as well.
Going into the half, Sahuaro led by a huge margin 42-7 as the home crowd in their “White Out” garb cheered loudly.
The second half started out the same as the opening kickoff with the Cougar’s line continuing to dominate Vista Grande’s defensive schemes. After an early third quarter touchdown, Head Coach Scott McKee called off the dogs and inserted the junior varsity players, who played the rest of the game.
That in itself, will help Sahuaro down the road as the younger players got a lot of quality minutes and will be able to fill in if needed without a big drop in efficiency.
Speed, size and an advantage in talent couldn’t be offset by the undermanned and smaller Spartans. They will take away many valuable lesson in the loss tonight. Their time will come and they will be better prepared to face their future opponents down the line.
After taking care of business tonight, the Cougars will host the Buena High Colts from Sierra Vista next Friday.
Looming is the near future is an early season showdown with the Sabino Sabercats for their first road contest of the young season.
This Cougar team will not look ahead and will give the Sabercats a tough go on Bowes Rd.
