Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College men’s tennis team opened play in the NJCAA Division I National Championship on Monday at the Collin County Tennis Facilities in Plano, TX.
The Aztecs advanced one singles player and two doubles teams onto the next round.
Sophomore Tomothy Ou and freshman Scott Mantelman advanced to the second round in the No. 1 doubles flight after they beat Andres Graterol and Martin Zarate from Jacksonville College (TX) in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Freshmen Chris McDaniels (Tanque Verde HS) and Beau Boyer (Cibola HS) earned a first round win in the No. 3 doubles flight as they defeated Sebastian Harrell and Braden Ishlee from Copiah-Lincoln Community College (MS) 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman Johnathan Wu was the only singles player to advance inthe winner’s bracket as he beat Zach Wisniewski from the College of Lake County (IL) 6-1, 6-2 in his first round match at No. 5 singles.
In singles competition, Ou fell in his first round match at No. 1 singles to Nils Michel from Eastern Florida State 6-2, 6-4 while sophomore Francisco Sotelo (Cholla HS) fell in the No. 2 singles flight to Austin Vos from Mississippi Gulf Coast 6-2, 6-1.
Mantelman hung tough but dropped two close sets to Isaiah Polk from Marion Military Institute (AL) 7-5, 6-4.
McDaniels lost at No. 4 singles to Wlayimer Jimenez from Cowley College (KS) 6-2, 6-1 and Boyer fell in the No. 6 singles flight to Diego Cruz-Vespa from Laredo Community College (TX) 6-1, 6-1.
