Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College softball team (9-5, 2-4 in ACCAC) suffered an ACCAC doubleheader sweep on Saturday in Prescott.
The Aztecs dropped two games at No. 6 ranked Yavapai College (12-3, 6-0). Freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) and Alyse Talamante were a couple of bright spots for the Aztecs.
Game 1: (6) Yavapai College Roughriders 8, Pima CC Aztecs 3: Fresh man pitcher Paige Adair suffered her first loss of the season (8-1) as she threw six innings giving up eight runs (four earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Cabral tied the game in the 4th inning with a solo homerun but the Roughriders scored five runs in the 5th inning to take a 6-1 advantage.
Cabral hit her second homerun in the 6th inning with a two-run shot to score sophomore Sierra Gentry to make it 6-3.
Cabral went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) was 1 for 4 with a triple.
Game 2: (6) Yavapai College Roughriders 13, Pima CC Aztecs 5 (6 innings): The Aztecs surrendered four runs in the bottom of the 6th inning with the mercy-rule coming into effect to end the game.
The Aztecs and Roughriders traded leads in the first two innings. Cabral reached on an error and drove in freshman Alese Casper and Flores in the 1st inning. With Yavapai up 3-2 in the top of the 2nd inning, Talamante led off the inning with a solo homerun to tie the game. Sophomore MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) and Flores hit RBI singles in the inning to put the Aztecs back up 5-3. The Roughriders tied it in the bottom of the inning and scored at least one run in every inning until the 6th inning.
Flores went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Talamante finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Casper was 3 for 4 with two runs scored.
Casper took the loss (1-4) as she threw three and one-third innings giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
The Aztecs will be on the road on Tuesday when they play at GateWay Community College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader in Phoenix. First pitch is scheduled to be at 6:00 p.m.
