Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (24-3, 16-3 in ACCAC) had its 10-game winning streak snapped on Saturday at the hands of Phoenix College (21-6, 17-2).
The No. 8 ranked Aztecs fell to the No. 13 Bears 87-77 in a battle between the top two teams in the ACCAC conference. The Bears now hold a one-game lead over the Aztecs in the conference with three games to go in the regular season.
The Aztecs took a 51-44 lead in 14:44 left in the second half but the Bears reclaimed the lead at 66-64 with 6:53 left. The Bears went on an 11-4 run in the next three and-a-half minutes to make it 77-68 with 3:17 remaining. Freshman Abram Carrasco (Cholla HS) scored four straight points to make it 79-72 with 1:05 left but the Aztecs could not get any closer.
The Aztecs struggled from three-point range going 2 for 15 in the second half. They went 9 for 29 for the game.
Carrasco scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first half to go along with nine assists. Sophomore Justin Bessard finished with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. He also had two blocks in the game.
Freshman Robert Wilson (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored 13 points on 4 for 6 shooting and also had seven rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Alize Travis finished with eight points and six assists.
The Aztecs were swept in their regular season head-to-head meetings with the Bears. Pima lost 99-77 last month in Phoenix.
The Aztecs hit the road on Wednesday when they play at Central Arizona College in Coolidge. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
