Murphy drops 26 points but Aztecs men’s basketball gets manhandled at Phoenix College

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (14-2, 6-2 in ACCAC) couldn’t put it together at Phoenix College (11-5, 7-1) on Wednesday.

The No. 3 ranked Aztecs struggled on both sides of the ball as they fell 99-77 snapping their nine-game winning streak. The 77 points scored was the lowest output this season for the Aztecs.

Up 35-30, the Aztecs were outscored 26-8 in the final seven minutes of the half as they went into the locker room trailing 57-43.

The Aztecs cut Phoenix College’s lead to 12 points on two occasions early in the second half. Down 64-51, the Bears took control of the game with a 25-5 run in six minutes to make it 89-56.

Sophomore Isaiah Murphy (Cienega HS) was a bright spot for the Aztecs as he scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half. He was the only Aztec to score in double figures. Sophomore Ilunga Moise (Raymond S. Kellis HS) had nine points off the bench.

This was the first meeting between the Aztecs and the Bears since the NJCAA Region I, Division II championship game last season where the Aztecs won 102-99.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus on Saturday when they host Central Arizona College at 4:00 p.m.
