Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College volleyball team (1-5, 1-1 in ACCAC) was fired up to play its first home match of the season on Friday at the West Campus.
The Aztecs defeated Phoenix College (1-2, 1-2) in four sets 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17.
After their lead was cut to 23-19 in the first set, sophomore Victoria Davis (Sahuaro HS) put down a kill and fellow sophomore Kylee Ashment (Highland HS) closed it out with an ace.
Down 18-14 in the second set, the Aztecs rallied to take a 22-21 lead after another Ashment ace. The Aztecs secured the final three points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After dropping the third set, the Aztecs found themselves down 9-3 early in the fourth set but rallied again to go up 14-12 forcing the Bears to call timeout. The Aztecs widened their lead to 19-14 before closing it out.
Davis, freshman Kaitlin Schmich and sophomore Kayli Riesgo (Cienega HS) all finished with double-doubles. Davis had 23 kills and 18 digs while Schmich closed out the match with 11 kills and 14 digs. Riesgo had 52 assists and 14 digs to go along with two aces.
Ashment had five blocks and three aces and freshman Lyrica Tavesi (Pima HS) had seven kills. Sophomore Anissa Conrad (Sahuaro HS) finished with 25 digs and sophomore Gianni Romero (Sahuaro HS) posted 10 digs.
The Aztecs will play in the Scottsdale Classic next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9 at Scottsdale Community College. They’ll open play against Edmonds Community College on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
