Fernando Loera hits walk-off single as Aztecs baseball escapes against Community Christian College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (27-6) found itself in a back-and-forth contest on Wednesday against Community Christian College but overcame to win their 17th straight game.

Freshman Fernando Loera hit a walk-off RBI single with two outs to give the Aztecs an 8-7 win over the Saints. Sophomore Terrell Huggins (Cienega HS) came in as a pinch runner scored the winning run.

The Aztecs trailed early but rallied to take the lead in the middle innings. The Saints wouldn’t go away as they tied the game in the 7th inning.

Down 3-1 in the 4th inning, freshman Saul Escarrega (Sahuarita HS) led off the inning with a solo home run for the Aztecs. Then with two outs, Loera hit a single and scored off freshman Logan Sanders’ (Catalina Foothills HS) RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.

The Aztecs took the lead in the 5th inning. They loaded the bases with no outs and Escarrega drew a walk to score freshman Bradon Zastrow. Freshmen Alec Acevedo (Nogales HS) and Ajay Ram (Ironwood Ridge HS) hit back-to-back sacrifice-fly RBIs scoring sophomore Andre Greene (Rio Rico HS) and freshman Zavien Watson respectively to make it 6-4. Freshman James Kobylt hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 6th inning to plate Sanders as Pima went up 7-4.

The Saints scored three runs to tie the game in the 7th inning.
Loera finished the game 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run. Escarrega went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run while Greene was 2 for 4 with two runs. Watson and Sanders each had an RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Zac Czerniawski (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he pitched one inning with two strikeouts.

The Aztecs play one more against Community Christian College on Thursday at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
