Bryan and Romero’s solid play leads Aztecs baseball in sweep over No. 17 Mesa CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (12-5-1, 3-2-1 in ACCAC) picked up a pair of quality wins on Sunday at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.

The Aztecs earned a sweep over No. 17 ranked Mesa Community College (11-6, 1-5). Sophomore Austin Bryan threw a complete-game shutout in the first game and freshman Brian Romero (Canyon del Oro HS) was a force at the plate in the second game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 1, (17) Mesa CC Thunderbirds 0: Sophomore Austin Bryan retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced as he threw a complete-game shutout. Bryan (4-0) gave up four hits with five strikeouts and one walk on 84 pitches to stay undefeated on the mound.
Freshman Karl Koerper hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score pinch runner JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) in the 4th inning.
Sophomore Rafael Padilla (Nogales HS) went 2 for 3 while freshmen Cole Cummings, Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) and sophomore Enrique Porchas (Kofa HS) each went 1 for 3.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, (17) Mesa CC Thunderbirds 2: The Aztecs broke openthe game with four runs in the 5th inning and helped seal it with another four runs in the 8th.
The Aztecs took advantage of a pitching change in the 5th inning with two outs. Romero hit a two-run RBI single to break the tie and score sophomores Phillip Sikes and Porchasto give Pima a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Richard Ware followed with a two-run shot to left field to make it 5-1.
Padilla and freshman J. Bill Rivera (Salpointe Catholic hit RBI singles in the 8th inning.
Romero finished the game 3 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sikes and Padilla each went 2 for 5 with an RBI. Ware was 1 for 4 with two RBIs.
Sophomore Hayden Udall (Campo Verde HS) produced another quality start as he pitched eight innings giving up two runs (two earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Baseball Field on Tuesday when they host an ACCAC doubleheader against Phoenix College. First pitch is at noon.
