Aztecs softball falls in doubleheader at No. 1 ranked Phoenix College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (6-6, 6-6 in ACCAC) struggled on offense on Saturday at Phoenix College (18-1, 16-0).

The Aztecs scored three runs off 10 hits for the day. They left 13 total runners on base (eight in the first game and five in the second game).

Game 1: (1) Phoenix College Bears 4, Pima CC Aztecs 1

Down 3-0 in the 4th inning, the Aztecs got on the board when freshman Jazmin Ayala (Sunnyside HS) hit a one-out RBI single to score freshman Lesly Cazares (Desert View HS). She hit a leadoff single to reach base.

Freshman Lorisa Martinez and sophomore Giselle Muñoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) had back-to-back walks with two outs in the 7th but Cazares struck out to end the game.

Ayala finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI and Cazares went 1 for 3 with a run scored. Freshman Gabrielle Favela was 2 for 3. Freshman Isabella Escobar drew two walks.

Freshman Anisah Triste took the loss (3-4) as she pitched six innings giving up four runs (four earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: (1) Phoenix College Bears 5, Pima CC Aztecs 2

The Aztecs were shutout for five innings but managed to score a pair of runs late in the game.

Freshman Kayla Gonzales (Salpointe Catholic HS) led off the 6th inning with a double and later scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 3-1.

With one out in the 7th, freshman Mariah Bartlett hit a 2-2 pitch out to left field for a solo home run. The next two batters recorded outs to end the game.

Bartlett finished the game 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Gonzales was 1 for 4 with a run. Muñoz finished 1 for 2 and Escobar was 1 for 3.

Lorisa Martinez took the loss (1-1) as she pitched five innings giving up four runs (four earned) on six hits with one strikeout and two walks.

The Aztecs will hit the road for an ACCAC doubleheader on Tuesday at Central Arizona College. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
