Aztecs softball drops doubleheader against South Mountain CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (6-4, 6-4 in ACCAC) dropped a pair of games on Saturday to South Mountain Community College (11-7, 11-5) at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field part of the Chapman Auto Sports Complex.
The Aztecs struggled to generate offense in the first game and couldn’t hold their lead in the second game.

Game 1: South Mountain CC Cougars 7, Pima CC Aztecs 0

The Aztecs managed five hits for the game. Freshman Mariah Bartlett finished 2 for 2 while freshman Jazmin Ayala (Sunnyside HS) went 1 for 1. Freshmen Gabrielle Favela and Kelli Samorano (Tucson Magnet HS) each went 1 for 3.

Freshman Anisah Triste took the loss and dropped to 3-2. She pitched seven innings giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with 10 strikeouts on 121 pitches.

Game 2: South Mountain CC Cougars 12, Pima CC Aztecs 9

The Aztecs took an early lead with five runs in the 1st inning but the Cougars scored six in the 4th to take the lead for good.

Ayala hit an RBI single to put the Aztecs on the board. Freshman Isabella Escobar hit a sacrifice-fly RBI and reached on an error to score Triste. Samorano followed with a 2-run RBI single to plate freshman Lesly Cazares (Desert View HS) and Ayala to make it 4-0.

Escobar later capped off the inning by scoring on an error.
Down 9-5 in the 4th inning, the Aztecs turned to Triste, who hit a 2-run homer to score freshman Kayla Gonzales (Salpointe Catholic HS) to cut the deficit to 9-7. The Cougars scored three more runs in the 6th inning.

The Aztecs tried to rally again in the bottom half of the 6th as Cazares hit a 2-run RBI double with two outs to score pinch runner Desiree Martinez (Canyon del Oro HS) and Triste.

Triste finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Samorano went 3 for 4 with two RBIs while Cazares was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Gonzales went 1 for 4 with two runs. Ayala and Escobar each had an RBI and a run scored.

Triste took the loss (3-3) after she pitched the final four innings in relief. She gave up seven runs (seven earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will hit the road on Friday when they play at Phoenix College in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game is set for 1:00 p.m.
