Aztecs baseball splits with Yavapai College in ACCAC match-up

(Prescott, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (31-9, 22-8 in ACCAC) played an ACCAC doubleheader at Yavapai College (21-16, 16-12) on Saturday as the teams split the day.

Freshman Parker Schmidt finished the day 3 for 5 with an RBI, four runs scored, four walks and a homer. Freshman Daniel Durazo (Salpointe Catholic HS) was 4 for 8 with three RBIs. Sophomore Bailey Seeger had a clutch hit in the first game and freshman Romeo Ballesteros (Salpointe Catholic HS) came up with a big hit in the second game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 8, Yavapai College Roughriders 2

Freshman Bradon Zastrow threw a complete-game and picked up the win (5-2). He pitched seven innings giving up two runs (two earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts and three walks on 97 pitches.

The Aztecs took the lead for good as they scored six runs in the 6th inning. Pima loaded the bases with no outs. Durazo hit a 2-run RBI single to score Schmidt and freshman Alex Kelch (Tucson Magnet HS) to put the Aztecs up 3-2.

Sophomore Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) followed with an RBI single to plate freshman Jose Enriquez.

With the bases juiced again and one out, Seeger stepped up and hit a 3-run RBI double scoring Ochoa, sophomore JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) and sophomore Terrell Huggins (Cienega HS) to make it 7-2.

Sophomore Andre Greene (Rio Rico HS) scored on a wild pitch in the 7th inning.

Schmidt led off the game with a home run as he finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Durazo went 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Ochoa was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Seeger finished 1 for 3 with three RBIs.

Game 2: Yavapai College Roughriders 8, Pima CC Aztecs 5

The Aztecs took an early advantage but the Roughriders scored eight unanswered runs to take the lead for good. Pima tried to rally in the 9th but fell short.

Durazo put the Aztecs on the board in the 1st inning with a sacrifice-fly RBI to bring in Schmidt, who drew a walk to start the game.

Ballesteros made the game 3-0 in the 2nd inning when he hit a 2-run RBI double to score freshmen Fernando Loera and Zavien Watson.

Down 8-3 in the 9th inning, the Aztecs tried to rally as Ballesteros hit a leadoff single. Schmidt drew a walk to put two runners on base. With one out, freshman Alec Acevedo (Nogales HS) hit an RBI double to bring in Ballesteros. Ochoa drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Schmidt scored on a passed ball but freshman Trent Kiraly, who represented the tying run, struck out to end the game.

Ballesteros finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run while Durazo was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Schmidt went 1 for 2 with two runs and three walks. Watson was 2 for 3 with a run.

Sophomore Noah Estrella (Flowing Wells HS) suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) as he pitched four innings giving up five runs (five earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field on Tuesday when they host Eastern Arizona College in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at noon.
