Aztecs baseball continues hot streak as it sweeps Scottsdale CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (24-6, 17-5 in ACCAC) won its 14 straight game on Saturday as the Aztecs took two at Scottsdale Community College (5-15, 5-15).

The Aztecs used a balanced attack on offense. Freshman Parker Schmidt went 5 for 8 with four RBIs and five runs. Freshman Alex Kelch (Tucson Magnet HS) was 4 for 7 with four RBIs and five runs.

Freshman Daniel Durazo (Salpointe Catholic HS) 3 for 8 with five RBIs and two runs while freshman Jose Enriquez finished 3 for 7 with four RBIs.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 4

The first four batters in the line-up (Schmidt, Kelch, Enriquez and Durazo) put up an offense barrage as they combined to go 9 for 15 with 11 RBIs and seven runs.

The Aztecs broke a tie score with five runs in the 3rd inning. Kelch hit a 2-run RBI double to give Pima the lead at 3-1. Enriquez followed with an RBI single to plate Kelch and Durazo capped off the inning with a 2-run home run.

Schmidt hit an RBI single in the 5th and an RBI triple in the 7th as he fell a home run short of the cycle finishing 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Kelch hit a pair of sacrifice-fly RBIs in the 4th and 7th innings as he was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Enriquez had a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 4th inning as he went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Durazo had the first RBI hit of the game in the 1st inning as he finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs and a run.

Sophomore Bailey Seeger helped Pima’s cause in the 5th inning with a 2-run RBI single it make it 10-4.

Freshman Bradon Zastrow picked up the win (3-2) as he pitched six innings giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 1

A combined pitching effort from sophomore Noah Estrella (Flowing Wells HS), freshman Darius Garcia, freshman Andrew Dennis (1 IP 1H, 3K’s) and freshman Kaden Palmer (1 IP, 1H, 1K) shut down the Scottsdale offense.

Garcia picked up the win (1-0) as he pitched four innings in relief giving up one hit with five strikeouts and one walk. Estrella started and went three innings giving up one run (one earned) one eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

The big inning for the Aztecs came in the 6th inning as they scored four runs to take a 9-1 lead. Sophomore Terrell Huggins (Cienega HS) led off with a triple and freshman Romeo Ballesteros (Salpointe Catholic HS) drove him in with an RBI double. Durazo later capitalized on a 2-run RBI double to score Schmidt and Kelch.
Enriquez hit a 2-run RBI double in the 5th inning bringing around Schmidt and Kelch as well.

Schmidt finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs while Kelch went 2 for 4 with three runs. Enriquez and sophomore Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) each were 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Durazo was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Huggins went 2 for 4 with a run. Sophomore JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) finished 2 for 2 with a run.

The Aztecs continue the road trips as they head to Cochise College on Tuesday for an ACCAC doubleheader. First pitch is at noon.
