Aztecs baseball can’t stronghold leads, get swept at No. 4 Yavapai College

(Prescott, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (16-7, 5-7 in ACCAC) could not maintain its leads as it fell at Yavapai College (22-3, 12-3) on Saturday in Prescott.

Freshman Daniel Durazo (Salpointe Catholic HS) finished the day 3 for 8 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Durazo and sophomore Armando Aguilar each hit home runs. Sophomore Angel Castillo (Sunnyside HS) and freshman Chaison Miklich took the losses on the mound.

Game 1: (4) Yavapai College Roughriders 8, (17) Pima Aztecs 7 (8 innings)

The Roughriders completed their comeback with a walk-off RBI single in the 8th inning off Castillo.

The Aztecs hit four straight singles to start the game as they scored five runs in the top of the 1st inning. Freshmen Jose Enriquez and Marcel Bachelier (Nogales HS) hit back-to-back RBI singles. Durazo capped off the inning with a three-run home run to make it 5-0.

The Aztecs went up 6-0 in the 2nd inning when pinch runner Andre Greene (Rio Rico HS) scored on an error.

The Roughriders scored two runs in the bottom half of the 2nd inning but the Aztecs countered in the 4th inning when sophomore Alex Bustamante (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a leadoff homer to make it 7-2.
The Roughriders scored runs in each of the last 5 innings. They tied it with two runs in the 7th.

Durazo finished the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Bustamante went 2 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Bachelier was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run while Enriquez finished 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Castillo took the loss (4-2) as he pitched the final two innings giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits. Freshman Ian Mejia (Sahuarita HS) threw five and one-third innings giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts and five walks.

Game 2: (4) Yavapai College Roughriders 8, (17) Pima CC Aztecs 4 (7 innings)

The Roughriders broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the 4th and a run in the 5th inning.

The Aztecs got on the board in the 2nd inning when freshman Fernando Loera hit a one-out RBI single to score Durazo, who led off the inning with a single.

Trailing 3-1 in the 3rd, the Aztecs came back as Enriquez hit a leadoff single which was followed by Aguilar’s two-run homer to tie the game at 3-3. Sophomore JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) put the Aztecs up 4-3 with his RBI double that brought in sophomore Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS).

Aguilar finished the game 1 for 4 with two RBIs while Loera was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a walk. Ochoa went 3 for 3 with a run scored and Rollon was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Durazo and Enriquez each finished 1 for 4 with a run.

Miklich took the loss (0-1) as he pitched three and two-third innings giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field on Tuesday when they host a non-conference doubleheader against Douglas College. First pitch is at noon.
