Gamboa and Dormanen pitch gems as Aztecs baseball sweeps Colorado Northwestern CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (7-0) earned the sweep on Saturday as it closed out the series with Colorado Northwestern Community College.

Sophomore Jimmy Gamboa and freshman John Dormanen (Ironwood Ridge HS) shut down the Spartans and gave up just one run for the day. The Aztecs pitching staff gave up a combined three runs (one earned) in the four games.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 5, Colorado Northwestern CC Spartans 1 (7 innings): Gamboa pitched a complete game giving up one run (one earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks on 117 pitches. He picked up the win (1-0).

The Aztecs took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning when freshman Jose Enriquez led off the inning with a double and later scored on a passed ball. The Spartans tied the game in the top of the 3rd.

After two quick outs in the 6th inning, the Aztecs loaded the bases. Sophomore Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a two-run RBI single to score pinch runner Andre Greene (Rio Rico HS) and freshman Marcel Bachelier (Nogales HS) to give Pima a 3-1 lead. Sophomore JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) followed with a two-run RBI single of his own plating freshman Ajay Ram (Ironwood Ridge HS) and Ochoa.

Ochoa was 1 for 1 with two RBIs, a run scored and two walks. Rollon went 1 for 1 with two RBIs while Bachelier finished 2 for 3 with a run scored. Enriquez was 1 for 2 with a run scored and a walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 3, Colorado Northwestern CC Spartans 0 (7 innings): Dormanen threw six shutout innings giving up three hits with four strikeouts and one walk on 83 pitches. He improved to 2-0 on the season. Freshman Kaden Palmer picked up the save as he threw the 7th inning giving up one walk.

The Aztecs got on the board in the 2nd inning when sophomore Bailey Seeger hit a one out RBI single to score Chaison Miklich, who led off the inning with a single.

Miklich wasn’t finished as he hit a leadoff homerun to left field in the 4th inning to make it 2-0.

Sophomore Alex Bustamante (Canyon del Oro HS) tacked on another insurance run for the Aztecs in the 5th inning. He led it off with a single and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. He scored on a double play ball.

Miklich finished the game going 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Seeger was 1 for 2 with an RBI while Bustamante went 1 for 3 with a run. Ram finished the game 2 for 3.

The Aztecs will continue non-conference play next Friday and Saturday when they host four games against El Paso Community College at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field. The first game of Friday’s doubleheader will begin at 11:00 a.m.
