Valenzuela ties for fifth place in pole after first day of NJCAA Division I Championships

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s and women’s track & field team opened competition on Thursday at the NJCAA Division I National Championships in Hobbs, NM.

Sophomore Tyler Valenzuela (Canyon del Oro HS) tied for fifth place in the men’s pole vault along with South Plains College’s Scott Frazier. Valenzuela finished with a vault of 4.45 meters (14-feet, 6-inches) and earned 3.5 points for the Aztecs.

Other Pima track & field finishes on Thursday:

Freshman Jaylen Coleman – 14th in men’s long jump 6.87 meters (22-feet, 5-inches)

Sophomore Hailey Myles (Boulder Creek HS) – 16th in women’s long jump 5.28 meters (17-feet, 3-inches)

The Aztecs will compete in the second day of the NJCAA Division I National Championships on Friday. Field events begin at 11:00 a.m. (MDT)
