Lozania’s 7 RBIs and Nerey’s pitching gem help Aztecs softball cruise by Scottsdale CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (23-20, 19-17 in ACCAC) earned its third straight doubleheader sweep on the road as it posted 28 runs in 10 innings played on Saturday at Scottsdale Community College (9-37, 5-33).

The Aztecs have won four straight and eight of their last 10 games.
Sophomore Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS) was unstoppable at the plate as she finished the day 4 for 6 with seven RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) produced a quality start in the second game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 17, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 6 (5 innings)

The Aztecs took control with six runs in the 2nd inning and used a five-run 4th inning to earn the run rule victory.

Lozania hit a two-run RBI single in the 1st inning with two outs to score sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS) and freshman Giselle Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) to make it 4-0. She had another two-run RBI hit in the 2nd inning to plate Munoz and freshman Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS) to make it 9-1.

Sophomore Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) hit a bases loaded two-run RBI single in the 4th inning driving in freshman Hope Adams (Benson HS) and sophomore Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS) to give the Aztecs a 14-2 lead.

Lozania added an RBI single in the 4th as she finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs and a run scored. Marshall was 3 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Munoz was a perfect 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Turner-Vizcarra was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Durazo-Corday went 1 for 1 with an RBI, two runs and two walks.

Sophomore Alese Casper picked up the win (9-4) as she pitched five innings giving up six runs (five earned) on 12 hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 11, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 1 (5 innings)

Nerey was a force on the mound as she picked up the win (6-7) after throwing five innings giving up one run (one earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks on 71 pitches.

The offense put up a six spot in the 4th inning to take control. With two outs and the bases loaded, Lozania drew a walk which was followed by sophomore Janice Garcia’s (Rio Rico HS) two-run RBI single to score Nerey and Turner-Vizcarra. Then Gomez drove in Lozania with an RBI single. Casper and sophomore Maia Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HD) hit RBI doubles in the inning.

Lozania hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning as she finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run scored and a walk. Casper and Caldera were each 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Gomez was 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Garcia finished 1 for 1 with two RBIs.

The Aztecs will continue playing on the road as they head to Thatcher on Tuesday for an ACCAC Division I doubleheader at Eastern Arizona College. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
