Arizona Bowl

Nevada comes out on top 16-13 in overtime

(Tucson, AZ)  The Air Force Jump Team descended from the Tucson sky to begin the pagentry of the fourth Arizona Bowl and away we went.

After a couple of three and outs by both teams to start the game, the Red Wolves took, the ball at the Nevada 38 yard line and hit a nifty thirty yard slant route to the Nevada 32 yard line but two subsequent plays later had Nevada taking over on their own 26 yard line off a failed fourth down play from Arkansas State.

Back to three plays and a punt as both teams seemed out of sync. Sooner or later something would have to pop.

ASU tried to break out but their forty seven yard field goal fell woefully short.

So at the end of an uneventful first quarter, the Red Wolves had a total of eighty nine to twenty seven yards for Nevada and a 0-0 tie.

The second quarter was much of the same with  teams starting to move the ball between the twenties,  but all ended the same when they got close.

Around the eight minute mark, Nevada began a drive that resulted in thirty six yard field goal by senior Ramiz Ahmed to put the Wolfpack on the board first 3-0 in a very lethargic first half.

In these slow starting games, many times, someone gets on the boards, and the flood gates open.

The subsequent drive by Arkansas State after the Wolfpack field goal, drove the drove the ball seventy five yards in just over two minutes to take the lead 7-3.

Red Wolves back on the attack get as far as the Wolfpack eight yard line and with a scant seven seconds left in the half, another field goal attempt was missed by ASU.

Halftime score Arkansas St, 7 Nevada 3.

Third quarter action saw ASU sustain a nice drive down to the three yard line of the Woolfpack but with an ineffective kicker were forced to go for it on fourth down, which was a bust as well.

Another Arkansas State drive got down to the six yard line before a interception by Nevada snuffed our another opportunity.

The Red Wolves we’re getting good at shooting  themselves in the foot.

At the end of the third quarter, the Red Wolves had over 400 yards  of offense and just seven points on the scoreboard.

On the other hand, the Wolfpack had two sustained drives going into the fourth quarter.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, ASU quarterback Justice Hansen threw an interception from the one yard line to negate another   Red Wolf drive.

The problem with Arkansas State is that they let Nevada hang around and that’s very dangerous. The Wolfpack took advantage of that when Davonte Lee socred the go ahead touchdown with around 1:45 left in the game to go up 10-7.

Back came the Red Wolves down the field to score a field goal from 36 yards out from their kicker who had missed two chip shot field goals earlier in the game.

Just as last year the game was headed into overtime with the score tied at 10-10.

Arkansas State got the first possession in overtime and we’re shut down bit kicked a field goal, 13-10 and now back to Nevada.

Knowing a touchdown would give them the win, Ty Gangi hit Reagan Roberson from eleven yards out to be the Top Dog in this year’s Arizona Bowl.

Nevada leaves Tucson having two Arizona Bowl Trophies under the belts. No other team can say that!

Overtime and exciting fisnishes are what  makes this Bowl Game one of the best in the nation.
