Aztecs men’s tennis halts Paradise Valley CC to close regular season

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College men’s tennis team (2-3) closed out the regular season with a road win on Tuesday at Paradise Valley Community College. The Aztecs defeated the Pumas 8-1.

Freshman Chris McDaniels (Tanque Verde HS) came back in the tie breaker after dropping a one-sided second set to beat Michael Gardiner 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (9) at No. 4 singles. Freshman Beau Boyer (Cibola HS) defeated Jonah Steffen at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-4.

McDaniels and Boyer earned a big win at No. 3 doubles after they claimed the tie-breaker over Michael and Ben Gardiner 9-8.

Freshman Scott Mantelman came away with the tie-breaker win in the first set winning his No. 3 singles match over Victor Tuncap 7-6 (7), 6-3. Sophomore Tomothy Ou won his No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Tyler Peters. The No. 1 doubles team of Ou and Mantelman dispatched of Peters and Tuncap 8-4.

Sophomore Francisco Sotelo (Cholla HS) played a tough second set and came away with the win at No. 2 singles after he defeated Tim Schlum 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Johnathan Wu beat Ben Gardiner at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-1. Sotelo and Wu dropped their No. 2 doubles match to Schlumand Steffen 8-3.

The Aztecs will compete in the Region I Championships on Tuesday and Wednesday, Apr. 24-25 at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale. Matches begin at 8:00 a.m.
