Aztecs softball hit three home runs but drop doubleheader to Central Arizona College

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College softball team (31-15, 22-14 in ACCAC) could not match Central Arizona College’s (28-17, 20-14) offensive firepower on Tuesday at the West Campus Softball Field.

The Aztecs surrendered 22 runs to the Vaqueras for the day. Freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) finished the day 4 for 6 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Game 1: Central Arizona College Vaqueras 13, Pima CC Aztecs 6: The Vaqueras took the lead early with six runs in the 1st inning and tacked on another four runs in the 4th.

The Aztecs got on the board in the 1st inning when Cabral hit an RBI double. She later scored when freshman Sarrah Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Cabral and sophomore Sierra Gentry hit back-to-back solo homers in the 3rd inning to cut the deficit to 7-4. Alizea Durazo-Corday hit a two-run home run in the 6th inning to score Jones.

Cabral finished the game 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gomez was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored while Jones and Gentry each went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Alese Casper took the loss (9-7) as she pitched a complete-game giving up 13 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

Game 2: Central Arizona College Vaqueras 9, Pima CC Aztecs 6: The Aztecs took the lead but the Vaqueras scored three runs in the 5th inning and four runs in the 6th.

The Aztecs got on the board in the 3rd inning when freshman Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS), Jones and Durazo-Corday hit three straight RBI singles. The Vaqueras took the lead with two in the 4th inning and three in the 5th to make it 5-3.

Corday tied the game at 5-5 in the 5th inning when she hit a two-run RBI double to score Gomez and Caldera.

Sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit an RBI double in the 6th inning to finish 2 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and two walks. Durazo-Corday was 2 for 3 with three RBIs while Caldera was 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cabral finished 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Gentry took the loss (5-3) as she pitched two and one third innings giving up four runs (four earned) on six hits with one strikeout and three walks.

The Aztecs will hit the road for another tough ACCAC Division I test at Eastern Arizona College on Saturday in Thatcher. First pitch will be at 12:00 p.m.
