Smith blasts 2 homers, has 8 RBIs as Aztecs softball scores 31 runs in sweep

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College softball team (24-8) put on a hitting show on Thursday in a non-conference doubleheader against Williston State College.

Sophomore Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) went 4 for 6 with two home runs, eight RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Alese Casper picked up a win on the mound and went 5 for 7 with four RBIs, four runs scored and five doubles.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Williston State College Tetons 0 (5 innings): The Aztecs scored in every inning as sophomores Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) and Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) each had three RBIs.

The Aztecs scored five runs in the 2nd inning as Casper hit an RBI double, which was followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Prieto and sophomore Sierra Gentry. They all scored runs in the inning.

Sophomore MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) hit a leadoff single in the 4th inning and Smith followed with a two-run homer to make it 11-0.
Prieto went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and three runs scored while Smith finished 1 for 2 with three RBIs and a run scored. Casper was 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored while Gentry finished 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and two walks.

Casper picked up the win (6-5) as she pitched a three-hit shutout with one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 19, Williston State College Tetons 4 (5 innings): The Aztecs poured it on again as they scored seven runs in the 1st inning and five runs in each the 2nd and 3rd innings.

Smith hit her second home run of the day in the 1st inning with a three-run shot to make it 6-0. Sophomore Vanessa Duarte (Pueblo HS) helped Pima’s cause in the 2nd inning when she hit a two-run homer to make it 12-0.

Smith finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Casper went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Maria Vanezza-Caldera (Tucson HS) was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Duarte went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Gentry pitched the final four innings and picked up the win (2-0). She gave up four runs (four earned) on four hits with three walks.

The Aztecs will hit the road on Saturday when they play a ACCAC conference doubleheader at Arizona Western College. The first pitch is at noon.
