NAU Knocks off Arizona in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (3-4) protected their home court on Tuesday night as they defeated Arizona (2-6) by a score of 84-66.

 

Sam Thomas was Arizona’s standout tonight as she recorded her first-career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The freshman also blocked three shots and is the first Wildcat to record a double-double this season.

JaLea Bennett was solid on the night with 13 points and seven rebounds while Kat Wright also scored in double-figures for the Wildcats as she poured in 13 points.

Arizona got off to a good start in the first quarter with a 20-15 lead over the Lumberjacks, but NAU responded well in the second period by outscoring the Wildcats 24-17, giving them a 39-37 lead at halftime. Thomas and Marlee Kyles each scored eight points in the first 20 minutes.

NAU locked in on defense in the third quarter allowing just 10 Arizona points while they made four three-pointers and scored 20 themselves, giving the Lumberjacks a 59-47 lead at the end of three. The Jacks kept their scoring shoes on in the fourth quarter as they poured in 25 points to Arizona’s 19, giving them a comfortable lead at the end of the game. NAU shot 55% from the field and 62% from behind the arc.

The next time the Wildcats will take the court again will be next Thursday, Dec. 14 as they face New Mexico State at 11 a.m. on School Day.
