The lights were bright, practice was in full swing as the Lady Cat Spikers were preparing for their home opening matches against Eastern Kentucky, Grand Canyon University and Radford on Saturday. First match starts at 10:30 am then noon with the nightcap at 7 pm.

Coach Dave Rubio and his Assistants were in coaching mode going over every minute detail in order to not only to teach, but to instill proper fundamentals, strategy and of course that Bear Down Pride.

The session was interrupted by the appearance of legendary former basketball coach Lute Olson. Coach Rubio had an ear to ear grin on his face upon seeing Coach Olson.

He quickly gathered his ladies and gave them a quick history lesson on the significance of the man standing before them. Rubio explained that Arizona was relatively unknown before Lute arrived and that he took a team coming off a 1-17 conference record and turned the program into a dynasty.

Some of the Lady Cat players weren’t even born when Olson stalked the sidelines of McKale in the 80’s and 90’s, but they looked in awe and listened intently to what Coach Rubio and Coach Olson has to say.

Admission is free to the public.
